What is Spyware

Spyware, also known as adware, is software that advertising companies create and install on personal computers, usually without the users knowledge or consent. This software tracks all the statistical data an individual will accumulate while surfing the net. Although the companies say that, they in no way infringe upon an individual by using any sensitive or identifying data, never the less, you are being watched while you surf.

A scary thought at the very least. And these statements come from the more reputable companies that use your information purely for market research, (presumably to help create a better product or offer a better service).

What does this mean for all the companies out there that are not so honest? Cyber crime is at an all time high and anyone with half a clue about programming and a laptop, can literally get into your life without you ever knowing it. If someone was famous or wealthy, that person could be easily undermined or blackmailed, if the right information had been aquired about them.

Spyware, ironically is not illegal, as crazy as that sounds. If someone was to spend hours in your back garden, video taping you and your family as you went about your private lives. That person would wind up behind bars before too long. How then, is the process or tracking your online activities not illegal? Simply because, most companies will disclose in their privacy policy, that your data is being collected. On the downside, you have no way of controlling what is done with this data and just what data is being collected in the first place. Being watched online is quite an uncomfortable idea to say the least.

The truth is though, every time you ever downloaded a piece of freeware, some small application. A calculator or a conversion tool, how many times have you read the pages and pages of small print they put to you during the installation process? Never? Yes, neither does anyone else. So, here is the main reason why so much spyware exists, people quite literally welcome it onto there computer, purely out of impatience to read the disclaimer.

How far does spyware go

In truth, much farther than seeing what site you visited last tuesday at 6.30 pm. In truth, spyware can do just about anything, given the chance. How about logging your email address and passwords, login in details to membership sites, online credit card accounts, bank accounts! Who you chatted to and what you have planned this weekend, capturing every keystroke you have made over the last year. Now that is a scary thought.
